ICU: Intensive Care Unit

ICU stands for Intensive Care Unit. It is a special department of the hospital that offers advanced medicine and life support to patients suffering from an acute injury or illness. Intensive care units look after those with the most dangerous and life-threatening injuries and ailments that require continuous and thorough monitoring by a team of specialized doctors and nurses. The team is specially trained for taking care of seriously injured or critically ill patients. Patients can be transferred directly in icu full form from an emergency room if required. This procedure is normally done if the patient's health is constantly declining.

An ICU is equipped with different medical equipments, a few of that are listed below:

  • Mechanical ventilators
  • Dialysis machine
  • External pacemakers
  • Syringe Pump

There is a separate ICU for babies were born prematurely, or born with a serious illness. The unit is called neonatal intense health unit (NICU).

ICU is also known as Intensive Therapy Unit or Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) or Critical Care Unit (CCU). First ICU specialist would be Peter Safar.
